factXtract Valentine's Day Around the World : Fun Facts!

Did you know that in Japan and Korea, men should not give gifts to women on Valentine's Day!? Did you know that there is a spike in break-ups right before the Valentine's Day!?


Valentine's day on February 14 has turned into an occasion when lovers are expected to express their love for each other by exchanging gifts and cards or having a romantic dinner.

And perhaps, this is why a recent study of Facebook status updates showed that there is a spike in break-ups just before the Valentine's Day!

If you are a male who likes the idea of receiving gifts on Valentine's day but you don't want to give gifts back, then Japan and Korea are places to be on this day!

In Japan, women give chocolates on Valentine's day to almost all of their male friends and colleagues, their boyfriend or their husband. It is interesting to know that Japanese chocolate companies make half of their annual sales during this time of the year! Interestingly, a month after Valentine's Day, on March 14, which is called the White Day, Men are supposed to return the favor with a gift that is at least 2 or 3 times more valuable.

Korea has a very similar tradition. Additionally, In Korea, on April 14, all the single people who didn't get anything meet at restaurants, eat black noodles and mourn their single life!

If you want to have a less stressful Valentine's Day, then living in Finland would be the ideal situation. In Finland, the Valentine's Day is also the day when close friends send cards and gifts to each other. So as long as you have at least one friend, you are safe!

If you are not a huge fan of Valentine's day , there are couple of tourist destinations where you can escape from all the hype.

Brazil is one of those places. Because Valentine's Day is usually very close to the Brazilian Carnival, it is not celebrated at all. The same is true for China, as Valentine's Day is often too close to Chinese New Year!
