Joe Besser who replaced Shemp "The Three Stooges" in 1956 had a clause in his contract specifically prohibiting him from being hit too hard!
"The Three Stooges" were amongst the leading slapstick comedians in early to mid--20th century. Now that a reboot of the film has been made (watch the trailer here: http://bit.ly/HRkymj ), let's review 5 interesting facts about the original three stooges that you probably didn't know!
Moe Howard & Larry Fine regularly played the roles of two stooges known as Moe and Larry. The 3rd stooge (Curly or Shemp) was played by many different actors though: Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, Joe Palma & Joe DeRita.
The group was originally called "Ted Healy and His Stooges", managed by a guy called Ted Healy. When "the Three Stooges" decided to leave Healy and start their own act, he became so upset that he threatened to bomb the theatres, where they would perform.
In 1930s, as leverage, the demand for the Three Stooges' films was so great that Columbia Pictures decided to refuse to supply exhibitors with the group's short movies unless they also agreed to book some of the studio's mediocre B movies!
During 23 years that The group had a contract with the Columbia Pictures, they never got a raise. The reason was that Cohen, the President of Columbia Pictures ensured that they remain ignorant of their fame and think that their days are numbered, which was far from true.
"You Nazty Spy!", a movie they made in 1940, is the first Hollywood film that openly satirized Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.
Because Curly had to shave his head for the movies, he felt insecure and unappealing to women. To compoensate, he started eating and drinking excessively. In 1940s, his health detirorated rapidly and he struggled to get through even the most basic scenes. He was eventually replaced by his brother Shemp.
Because Columbia Picture's short-subject division was downsized in 1952, the production had to become significantly faster. They started using old footages of the group (sometimes up to 75% of the running time consisting of old footage). As the results, the "new" shorts could be filmed in a single day!

Because of the low interest in short films in 1950s, Columbia decided against renewing the group's contract in 1957. They were all let go without any proper farewell ceremony, even though they had been a great asset for the studio for more than 20 years.
In Chinese, the group is known as "Three Smelly Shoemakers" and In Japanese, they are known as "Three Idiot Generals".
