Did you know that one famous inventor was the main reason Hollywood studios had to escape from NY to LA? He is the same person whose actions led to the bankruptcy of the world's first "cinema magician". Let's review who that person is!
So Why did Hollywood move from New York to Los Angeles?
And the first "cinema magician" went bankrupt?
The Answer is: Thomas Alva Edison!
In the earliest days of the American film industry, New York (and East Coast of United States) were amongst the most popular filming locations.
However, Thomas Edison (the famous inventor) owned the patent rights of many of the equipment of the filming companies. The headquarter of the Edison's Company was in NY and thus, it was easy for his agents to go and seize the cameras of the filming crew!
Therefore, by moving to Los Angeles and distancing themselves from NY, the filming companies managed to escape the harassment of the Edison and his employees!
Interestingly, Edison himself, did not respect the copyright much!
Georges Méliès was a famous French filmmaker in early 20th century and is sometimes referred to as the first "Cinemagician".
He is perhaps well-known for making the first science-fiction film ("A Trip to the Moon"), that is now considered one of the iconic movies of the silent cinema.
To profit more from the movie, Méliès had intended to release the film in the US. Unfortunately for him, Thomas Edison's film technicians, secretly had made copies of the movie and distributed it in the US! The resulting financial blow and the lack of success of his future movies, eventually led to the bankruptcy of Méliès.
