Nowruz is the name of the Iranian (Persian) New Year and marks the First day of Spring. It has been celebrated for more than 3000 years. Here are 5 interesting facts that you probably didn't know about Nowruz!
Despite popularity around the world, there is little agreement on the correct spelling of Nowruz. Common spellings used include: Nouruz, Norouz, Norooz, Narooz, Nawruz, Newroz, Newruz, Nauruz, Nawroz, Noruz, and Nowrouz, amongst many others!
Nowruz is not only celeberated in Iran, but in other countries including Afghanistan, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Iraq, Syria,Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
It is believed that Nowruz is invented by Zoroaster.
In 2010, UN's General Assembly recognized the International Day of Nowruz. In 2009, Canadian Parliamant added Nowruz to the national calendar of Canada.

Traditionally a man called Haji Firuz whose face is painted in black and dresses in red is the herald of Nowruz. He sings and dances in the streets with tambourines and delivers the news that Nowruz is coming.

On 13th of Nowruz, Iranians throw out their Sabzeh (sprout) dish in the running water. This is because they believe the Sabzeh dish has symbolically collected all the sickness and bad lick of their home and should go away.
On 13th of Nowruz (called "Sizdah Bedar"), single Iranian women tie the leaves of their Sabzeh (sprout) dish before throwing it away. When they tie, they express their wish to get married before the next year's Sizdah Bedar.
Iranians have a tradition similar to April's Fool Day as well called "the lie of the 13th" . On Sizdah bedar, they have to lie to someone and make them believe it. Sizdah Bedar usually conincides with April's Fool Day as well.
